I'm a software developer and year long triathlete. I created this chest press calculator to help gym-goers track their calorie burn on machine exercises, using the same proven formula as our bench press calculator with adjustments for machine-assisted movement.

Chest Press Machine Calorie Calculator

A chest press machine workout typically burns between 2.5 and 7.5 calories per minute, depending on the weight used and your rep pace. The chest press machine is a popular alternative to the bench press, offering guided movement and stability.

Use our calculator above to estimate your calorie burn during chest press machine exercises based on the weight setting and number of repetitions.

The Calorie Burn Formula

Our calculator uses a formula similar to the bench press calculation, adjusted for machine-assisted movement:

Calories Burned = (Total Weight Lifted / 150) × 5 × 0.85 Where: Total Weight Lifted = Weight × Repetitions 0.85 = Machine efficiency factor

The 0.85 efficiency factor accounts for the reduced stabilization effort required on a machine compared to free weights like the bench press.

Input Parameters

  • 1

    Weight on Machine

The weight setting on the chest press machine in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lbs).

  • 2

    Repetitions

The number of times you press the weight in one set.

Chest Press vs Bench Press Calories

The bench press typically burns about 15% more calories than the chest press machine for the same weight and reps. This is because free weight exercises require additional stabilizer muscle engagement. However, the chest press machine offers benefits for beginners or those recovering from injuries.

Important Notes

  • 1

    Machine Variation

Different chest press machines may have varying resistance curves and weight stack calibrations.

  • 2

    Individual Variations

Actual calorie burn can vary based on factors like fitness level, age, and workout intensity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories does chest press burn?

The chest press machine typically burns about 15% fewer calories than the bench press for the same weight and reps due to reduced stabilizer muscle engagement. A typical set of 10-12 reps at moderate weight burns approximately 5-10 calories.

Is chest press as effective as bench press for burning calories?

The bench press burns slightly more calories because it requires additional stabilizer muscles. However, the chest press machine is excellent for beginners, those with injuries, or for isolating chest muscles without worrying about balance.

How does the chest press compare to other exercises?

The chest press burns fewer calories than compound free weight exercises but more than isolation movements. It's a great addition to a comprehensive chest workout routine that may include bench press, push-ups, and flyes.
