Calculation Method

An ideal body weight estimate gives a healthy target weight range from your height and sex. This calculator averages four classic formulas and shows your healthy BMI range for context.

The Four Formulas

Each adds weight per inch over 5 feet (152 cm):

FormulaMen (base + per inch > 5ft)Women
Devine50 + 2.3 kg45.5 + 2.3 kg
Robinson52 + 1.9 kg49 + 1.7 kg
Miller56.2 + 1.41 kg53.1 + 1.36 kg
Hamwi48 + 2.7 kg45.5 + 2.2 kg

The Healthy BMI Range

A BMI of 18.5–24.9 is classed as healthy. For your height, that is a weight range — often a more practical target than a single "ideal" number, because it allows for natural variation in build.

These formulas use only height and sex and ignore muscle and frame size, so athletes may sit above their "ideal" weight while being lean. Use body-fat percentage and waist measurements for a fuller picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is ideal body weight calculated?

Classic formulas estimate ideal weight from height and sex. For example, the Devine formula is 50 kg (men) or 45.5 kg (women) plus 2.3 kg for every inch over 5 feet. This calculator averages four such formulas.

What is the most accurate ideal weight formula?

No single formula is definitive — Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi give slightly different numbers. The healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) is often a more practical target because it gives a range rather than one number.

Does ideal weight account for muscle?

No. Height-and-sex formulas ignore body composition, so muscular people may exceed their 'ideal' weight while being lean and healthy. Use body-fat percentage for a fuller picture.
