The US Navy method is accurate to within 3-4% of more precise methods like DEXA scanning. It's been validated extensively for military fitness assessments and provides reliable estimates for most people.
For men, 14-18% is considered 'Fitness' level, while 6-14% is 'Athletes'. For women, 21-25% is 'Fitness' and 14-21% is 'Athletes'. Essential fat (minimum for health) is 2-6% for men and 10-14% for women.
For men, measure at the navel (belly button) level. For women, measure at the narrowest part of your waist, typically just above the belly button. Keep the tape measure level and snug but not tight.
Women naturally store more fat in the hip region, so the formula accounts for this difference. The hip measurement is taken at the widest part of the buttocks for accuracy.
BMI is a simple height-to-weight ratio that doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. Body fat percentage directly measures fat tissue, making it more useful for athletes or muscular individuals who may have high BMI but low body fat.
