BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It's calculated as weight (kg) divided by height squared (m²). BMI is used as a screening tool to identify possible weight problems.
A healthy BMI range is typically 18.5 to 24.9. Below 18.5 is considered underweight, 25-29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is classified as obese according to WHO standards.
BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass, so athletes may have high BMI despite low body fat. For a complete picture, combine BMI with other measurements like body fat percentage.
BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²). For example, a person weighing 70 kg and 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9
A BMI of 30 or higher is classified as obese. Obesity is further divided into Class I (30-34.9), Class II (35-39.9), and Class III (40+), each carrying progressively higher health risks.
