How the PFT Is Scored

The USMC Physical Fitness Test (PFT) measures a Marine's baseline fitness across three events: an upper-body event (pull-ups or push-ups), a plank for core endurance, and a 3-mile run. Each event is worth up to 100 points for a maximum total of 300. This calculator estimates your score and the class you fall into.

The Three Events

  • Pull-ups or push-ups: Pull-ups can earn the full 100 points. If you choose push-ups instead, the event is capped at 70 points, so most competitive Marines choose pull-ups.
  • Plank: A forearm plank held for time replaced the crunch. Holding roughly 3:45 reaches the 100-point maximum.
  • 3-mile run: A timed run; faster times score higher, with age- and sex-adjusted standards.

How Scoring Works

Each event is scored on a points scale anchored by a minimum-passing performance (about 40 points) and a maximum performance (100 points). Performances between the two anchors are scored linearly. To pass, you must clear the minimum in every event and reach the total threshold for at least 3rd class.

Worked Example

An 18-year-old male does 15 pull-ups, holds a 3:00 plank, and runs 3 miles in 21:00. The pull-ups land partway up the 4-to-23-rep scale, the plank scores in the 80s, and the run scores in the 70s — totaling roughly a solid 2nd-class score.

Why Push-ups Are Capped

The Marine Corps caps the push-up option at 70 points to encourage pull-up training, which more directly reflects functional upper-body strength. If you can do pull-ups at all, they almost always score higher.

Note: This calculator uses the age 17–20 reference band with linear scoring between published anchors. Official USMC PFT tables vary by exact age band and account for altitude; use this tool as a training guide, not an official score sheet. Consult your unit's PT standards and a qualified instructor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a passing PFT score?

You need at least 150 points total and the minimum in every event to pass (3rd class). 1st class is 235 or higher, 2nd class is 200-234, and 3rd class is 150-199.

Are pull-ups or push-ups better for the PFT?

Pull-ups can earn the full 100 points, while push-ups are capped at 70 points. If you can do pull-ups, they almost always score higher, so most Marines choose them.

How long do I plank for a max score?

Holding the forearm plank for about 3 minutes 45 seconds reaches the 100-point maximum. The minimum passing plank is just over a minute.
