How the Navy PRT Is Scored

The U.S. Navy Physical Readiness Test (PRT) is the fitness portion of the Navy's Physical Fitness Assessment. It uses three events — a forearm plank, push-ups (2 minutes), and a 1.5-mile run (with a 2 km row or other cardio alternatives). Each event earns a performance category, and your overall result is a category such as Outstanding, Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, or Fail. This calculator estimates each event and your overall category.

The Three Events

  • Forearm plank: Replaced the timed curl-up in 2021. Held for time; longer holds score higher.
  • Push-ups: As many correct push-ups as possible in 2 minutes.
  • Cardio: A 1.5-mile run, or an approved alternative such as a 2 km row on a Concept2 erg.

Performance Categories

Each event is graded against age- and sex-specific tables that map raw performance to a category. The overall PRT result reflects your weakest passing event, and any failed event fails the test.

Category Meaning
OutstandingTop-tier performance, well above standard
ExcellentStrong, comfortably above the minimum
GoodSolid passing performance
SatisfactoryMeets the minimum standard
FailBelow minimum in one or more events

Worked Example

A 22-year-old male holds a 2:00 plank (Good), does 55 push-ups (Excellent), and runs 1.5 miles in 11:00 (Good). His overall category is governed by his weakest passing event, landing at Good.

Why the Weakest Event Matters

Because the overall category follows your lowest event, balanced training pays off: a single weak event caps your overall result no matter how strong the others are.

Note: This calculator uses the 18–24 reference band anchored between the Satisfactory pass and Outstanding standards. Official OPNAV PRT tables differ by exact age group and update periodically. Treat this as a training estimate and confirm with your command fitness leader.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Navy PRT events?

The forearm plank (held for time), push-ups (as many as possible in two minutes), and a 1.5-mile run. Approved cardio alternatives such as a 2 km row exist for those on profile.

What is a passing Navy PRT?

You must reach at least the Satisfactory standard in every event. Failing any single event fails the test. Higher categories are Good, Excellent, and Outstanding.

Why did the Navy switch to the plank?

The forearm plank replaced the timed curl-up to reduce lower-back strain and better measure core stability, which is more relevant to real-world tasks than rapid sit-ups.
