Calculation Method

A body-shape classification describes how your proportions are distributed between bust, waist, and hips. Knowing your shape helps with clothing fit and self-knowledge — it says nothing about health or attractiveness. This tool compares three circumference measurements and matches them to one of five common categories: hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle, and inverted triangle.

The Logic

Two ratios do most of the work: the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and the bust-to-hip ratio. A small waist relative to bust and hips signals an hourglass; a dominant lower or upper body signals pear or inverted triangle.

waist-to-hip = waist / hip
bust-to-hip  = bust / hip

Worked Example

Bust 90 cm, waist 70 cm, hips 95 cm:

  • Waist-to-hip = 70 / 95 = 0.74 (clearly defined waist)
  • Bust-to-hip = 90 / 95 = 0.95 (bust and hips balanced)
  • A defined waist with balanced bust and hips → Hourglass.

The Five Shapes

Shape Defining feature
HourglassBust ≈ hips, narrow defined waist
Pear (Triangle)Hips wider than bust
Apple (Round)Waist close to bust, midsection fullest
RectangleBust, waist, hips similar — little taper
Inverted TriangleBust/shoulders broader than hips

How to Measure

  • Bust: around the fullest part of the chest, tape level and parallel to the floor.
  • Waist: the narrowest point, usually just above the navel.
  • Hips: the widest part of the buttocks.

Keep the tape snug but not tight, and stand relaxed without sucking in. Measuring in front of a mirror helps keep the tape level.

Why Shape Is Not Fixed

Posture, bra fit, recent meals, and muscle development all shift measurements slightly day to day. Treat the result as a guide to your general silhouette rather than a permanent label, and re-measure if your body changes substantially.

Note: Body-shape categories describe proportions for styling and personal interest only. They are not a measure of health, fitness, or body fat. For health-related body composition, see a body-fat or waist-to-height calculator and a qualified professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure for body shape?

Measure your bust at the fullest part of the chest, your waist at its narrowest point (usually just above the navel), and your hips at the widest part of the buttocks. Keep the tape level and snug.

What are the five body shapes?

Hourglass (balanced bust and hips with a defined waist), pear (hips wider than bust), apple (fullness around the midsection), rectangle (little waist taper), and inverted triangle (bust and shoulders broader than hips).

Does body shape indicate health?

No. Body shape describes proportions for styling and self-knowledge only. For health-related body composition, use a waist-to-height ratio or body-fat calculator instead.

Can my body shape change?

Your underlying frame is largely fixed, but fat distribution, muscle development, and posture can shift measurements over time. Re-measure if your body composition changes substantially.
