How Are Strikes Scored in Bowling? Strike Score Formula Explained

A strike in bowling is scored as 10 plus the next two balls. It's the most rewarding shot in the game because those bonus balls can dramatically increase your frame total — up to 30 points for a single frame.

What is a Strike in Bowling?
A strike (marked as X on the scorecard) occurs when you knock down all 10 pins on your very first ball in a frame. In frames 1–9, no second ball is thrown after a strike.
Strike Scoring Formula
Strike frame score = 10 + Roll 1 of next frame + Roll 2 of next frame

Why the Strike Score Isn't Immediate
A strike frame cannot be scored until you complete the next two balls. This is why the frame box stays blank on the scorecard after a strike — you're waiting for the bonus information.
Consecutive Strikes
Consecutive strikes are especially powerful because each strike's bonus includes other strikes:

A turkey (three consecutive strikes) is particularly significant — the first strike of a turkey always scores 30, which is the highest possible score for any single frame.
Strike in the 10th Frame
The 10th frame has different strike rules:
- Strike on the first ball of the 10th: You earn two bonus balls (total of 3 balls in frame 10)
- Two strikes in a row in the 10th: The third ball can be any value 0–10
- Three strikes in the 10th: The 10th frame scores 30
The 10th frame bonus rolls are included directly in the frame total — there is no external bonus beyond frame 10.
How a Strike Affects Your Running Total
Because the strike frame score depends on future rolls, your cumulative score column on the scorecard will have a gap after each strike. Once the two bonus balls are thrown, the frame total and all subsequent cumulative scores fill in.
