Bowling Scoring Rules Explained — Complete USBC Reference

Bowling scoring follows rules set by the United States Bowling Congress (USBC), the governing body for ten-pin bowling worldwide. Understanding these rules lets you track your own game accurately — or verify a scorecard.

The Basics: Frames and Rolls
A standard bowling game consists of 10 frames. In each frame you have up to two balls to knock down all 10 pins.

Open Frame Rules
An open frame occurs when you fail to knock down all 10 pins in two rolls.
- Score: Roll 1 + Roll 2
- Bonus: None
- Maximum per frame: 9
Example: 6 then 3 → frame scores 9.
Spare Rules ( / )
A spare is recorded when you knock down all remaining pins on your second ball.
- Score: 10 + the number of pins on your next ball (bonus)
- Maximum per frame: 20 (spare followed by a strike)
- Frame score is not written until the next roll is thrown
Example: 7 then / (3 remaining), next ball = 8 → spare frame scores 10 + 8 = 18.
Strike Rules ( X )
A strike is recorded when you knock down all 10 pins on your first ball. The frame ends — no second ball is thrown in frames 1–9.
- Score: 10 + the next two balls (bonus)
- Maximum per frame: 30 (followed by two more strikes)
- Frame score is not written until the next two balls are thrown
Example: X, then 7 and 2 → strike frame scores 10 + 7 + 2 = 19.
Consecutive Strikes

10th Frame Rules
The 10th frame is handled differently to give bowlers the opportunity to earn bonus balls for strikes and spares:

Important: In the 10th frame, all balls thrown (including bonus balls) count directly toward the frame total. There is no external bonus beyond the frame.
Running Score (Cumulative)
The scorecard shows a running total — each frame's cumulative score builds on the previous frame. Because strike and spare frames depend on future rolls, those frame scores are left blank until the bonus rolls are thrown.
