I have been a runner for over 10 years and I built this calculator to help runners like you and me with training and racing.

The age-graded running calculator answers a question raw finish times cannot: how good is your performance once you account for your age and sex? It compares your time to an age- and sex-adjusted world standard and returns a percentage, letting a 55-year-old and a 25-year-old compare results on a level field.

How Age Grading Works

Age grading, developed by World Masters Athletics (WMA), is built on two pieces of data for each distance: the open-class world standard (an approximate best time) and an age factor that adjusts that standard for the slowing that comes with age. The percentage is:

Age-graded % = (Age-adjusted standard time) ÷ (Your time) × 100
Open-age equivalent = Your time × Age factor

The age factor is 1.00 for an open-age athlete and falls below 1.00 as you get older, reflecting the decline in performance capacity.

What the Percentage Means

  • 100%: world-record-equivalent for your age and sex.
  • 90%+: world class.
  • 80–90%: national class.
  • 70–80%: regional class.
  • 60–70%: local class — a strong club runner.

Why It Is Useful

Age grading lets you track improvement even as your raw times slow with age — your percentage can keep climbing through your 40s and 50s if your fitness relative to your peers improves. It also enables fair competition: many races award prizes by age-graded score so masters athletes compete on equal terms with the open field.

Note: The factors here approximate the official WMA tables, which are revised periodically and differ slightly by distance. Use this as a guide; for sanctioned results consult the current official age-grading tables. Informational only, not medical advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good age-graded score?

Over 90% is world class, 80–90% national class, 70–80% regional class, and 60–70% a strong local runner. 100% equals an age-group world record.

How does age grading work?

Your time is compared to an age- and sex-adjusted world standard, then expressed as a percentage so runners of any age can be compared fairly.

Are these the official WMA factors?

These approximate the official World Masters Athletics tables, which are revised periodically and vary slightly by distance. Use them as a guide.
