As a triathlete who trains both indoors and outdoors, I created this calculator to bridge the gap between treadmill speed settings and the pace-based training plans I follow. It's essential for matching indoor workouts to outdoor race goals.

Understanding Treadmill Speed and Pace

When using a treadmill, you'll notice the display shows your speed in km/h or mph. But what does that mean for your running pace? Our Treadmill Pace & Speed Calculator bridges this gap, helping you understand exactly how fast you're moving and how long it takes to cover each kilometer or mile.

This tool is essential for runners who train both indoors and outdoors. While outdoor runners often think in terms of pace (minutes per kilometer or mile), treadmill displays show speed. Converting between the two helps you set accurate training targets and track your progress consistently.

Speed vs. Pace: What's the Difference?

Speed measures how much distance you cover in a set amount of time (kilometers per hour or miles per hour). Pace is the inverse—it measures how much time it takes to cover a set distance (minutes per kilometer or minute per mile).

Speed to Pace: Pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ Speed (km/h)
Pace to Speed: Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ Pace (min/km)

For example, if your treadmill shows 10 km/h, your pace is 60 ÷ 10 = 6:00 min/km. This means you cover one kilometer every 6 minutes.

Why Pace Matters for Training

Most running training plans prescribe workouts in pace rather than speed. When your coach says "run your easy miles at 5:30 pace," you need to know what treadmill speed setting corresponds to that pace. Our calculator makes this conversion instant and accurate.

Common Treadmill Speed Conversions

Here's a quick reference for typical treadmill settings:

  • 1

    Walking (4-6 km/h / 2.5-3.7 mph)

Pace: 10:00-15:00 min/km. Ideal for warm-ups, cool-downs, and recovery sessions.

  • 2

    Jogging (7-9 km/h / 4.3-5.6 mph)

Pace: 6:40-8:34 min/km. Comfortable conversational pace for base building.

  • 3

    Running (10-12 km/h / 6.2-7.5 mph)

Pace: 5:00-6:00 min/km. Moderate to tempo effort for fitness building.

  • 4

    Fast Running (13-16 km/h / 8-10 mph)

Pace: 3:45-4:37 min/km. Threshold to interval training intensity.

How the Calculator Works

Input Parameters

  • 1

    Treadmill Speed

Enter the speed shown on your treadmill display in km/h or mph.

  • 2

    Workout Duration (Optional)

Enter your workout time to calculate the total distance you'll cover.

Output Results

  • 1

    Speed in Both Units

See your treadmill speed displayed in both km/h and mph simultaneously.

  • 2

    Pace in Both Units

Your running pace shown as min/km and min/mile for easy comparison.

  • 3

    Distance Covered

If you enter a workout duration, see exactly how far you'll travel.

Conversion Formulas

The calculator uses these standard conversion formulas:

Speed Conversions:
km/h = mph × 1.60934
mph = km/h ÷ 1.60934

Pace Conversions:
Pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ Speed (km/h)
Pace (min/mile) = 60 ÷ Speed (mph)

Distance Calculation:
Distance = Speed × Time

Practical Applications

Matching Outdoor Training Paces

If your outdoor 5K pace is 5:30 min/km, set your treadmill to 10.9 km/h (6.8 mph) to replicate that effort. Remember that treadmill running is often slightly easier than outdoor running due to the lack of wind resistance—consider adding 1-2% incline to compensate.

Interval Training

For interval workouts, use the calculator to determine exact speed settings. For example, if your workout calls for 400m repeats at 4:00 min/km pace, you'll need to set your treadmill to 15 km/h (9.3 mph) for those fast intervals.

Race Pace Simulation

Preparing for a race? Use this calculator to find the exact treadmill speed for your goal pace. Training at race pace helps your body adapt to the specific effort level you'll need on race day.

Tips for Accurate Treadmill Training

  • 1

    Calibrate Your Treadmill

Treadmill belt speeds can drift over time. Occasionally verify the speed using a stopwatch and measuring tape.

  • 2

    Add 1% Incline for Realism

Research suggests a 1% incline best simulates the energy cost of outdoor running at the same pace.

  • 3

    Don't Hold the Handrails

Holding on changes your running mechanics and makes the workout easier than displayed.
