How to Import Google Earth Routes to Your GPS Device
Step-by-step guide to transferring Google Earth routes to Garmin, Wahoo, and other GPS devices. Learn how to export KML and convert to GPX for navigation.
Can I send Google Earth routes to my GPS? Yes! While Google Earth uses KML files and GPS devices use GPX files, you can easily bridge the gap. The process involves exporting your route from Google Earth and converting it to the GPX format your device understands.
Why Plan in Google Earth?
Google Earth is fantastic for route planning because:
- 3D Terrain: See the actual elevation and landscape
- Satellite Imagery: Check if a trail actually exists
- Street View: Verify road conditions and parking spots
- Freedom: Draw off-trail routes anywhere
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Create Your Route
- Open Google Earth Pro (desktop version is best)
- Use the Add Path tool (Ctrl+Shift+T)
- Click to draw your route points
- Name your path and click OK
2. Export as KML
- Find your route in the Places sidebar
- Right-click the route name
- Select Save Place As...
- Change "Save as type" to Kml (important!)
- Save to your desktop
3. Convert to GPX
GPS devices generally cannot read KML files. You must convert them.
- Go to the KML to GPX Converter
- Upload your .kml file
- Click Convert and download the .gpx file
4. Load onto Your Device
For Garmin Devices:
- Connect your Garmin to your computer via USB
- Open the Garmin drive in File Explorer/Finder
- Navigate to the
Garminfolder, thenNewFiles - Drag and drop your
.gpxfile intoNewFiles - Disconnect safely. Your route will appear under "Courses" or "Saved Tracks"
For Wahoo Elemnt:
- Transfer the GPX file to your phone
- Open the file with the Wahoo Elemnt app
- Select "Import Route"
- Sync your head unit
Common Issues
"My GPS doesn't show the route"
- Did you save as KMZ instead of KML? (Convert KMZ to KML first)
- Did you put it in the right folder? (Garmin requires the
NewFilesfolder) - Try converting to a "Track" instead of a "Route" if your device is picky.
"No Elevation Data"
- If you drew the line on the map ("clamped to ground"), it might not have elevation data embedded.
- Use a route planner like Komoot or CalTopo for better elevation profiles, or use Google Earth Pro's "Show Elevation Profile" feature before exporting.
