Jonas
Kettlebell swings are a core part of my HIIT and conditioning work. I built this calculator to help athletes get an accurate, science-based calorie estimate for one of the highest-calorie-burn exercises per minute available without a gym.
Kettlebell swings burn approximately 9–13 calories per minute depending on swing style and body weight. A 75 kg person performing Two-Handed Swings burns ~11.25 calories per minute (MET 9.0), while American Swings reach up to 16.25 calories per minute (MET 13.0) for the same bodyweight.
Calories Burned by Swing Count and Body Weight
The table below uses MET 9.0 (Two-Handed Swing) at 20 reps per minute. Formula: Calories = 9.0 × Weight (kg) × (Swings ÷ 20 ÷ 60)
| Swings | 60 kg (132 lb) | 70 kg (154 lb) | 80 kg (176 lb) | 90 kg (198 lb) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 swings | 4.5 cal | 5.3 cal | 6.0 cal | 6.8 cal |
| 20 swings | 9.0 cal | 10.5 cal | 12.0 cal | 13.5 cal |
| 50 swings | 22.5 cal | 26.3 cal | 30.0 cal | 33.8 cal |
| 100 swings | 45.0 cal | 52.5 cal | 60.0 cal | 67.5 cal |
| 200 swings | 90.0 cal | 105.0 cal | 120.0 cal | 135.0 cal |
Calorie Burn by Swing Style
Different swing variations have significantly different MET values, reflecting the greater power output and muscle recruitment required for overhead and unilateral variations:
| Swing Style | MET | Cal/min (75 kg) | Cal per 50 swings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-Handed Swing | 9.0 | 11.25 cal | 28.1 cal |
| Single-Arm Swing | 11.0 | 13.75 cal | 45.8 cal |
| American Swing | 13.0 | 16.25 cal | 54.2 cal |
How the Kettlebell Swing Calorie Calculator Works
The calculator uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method — the same approach used in the Compendium of Physical Activities published by Ainsworth et al. The formula is:
Example Calculation
Scenario: 75 kg person performing 50 Two-Handed Swings at 20 reps/min
1. Convert swings to hours: 50 ÷ 20 ÷ 60 = 0.0417 hours
2. Apply formula: 9.0 × 75 × 0.0417 = 28.1 calories
Why Kettlebell Swings Are a Top Calorie-Burning Exercise
Kettlebell swings achieve a high MET (9.0–13.0) because they recruit the entire posterior chain — glutes, hamstrings, and lower back — in an explosive ballistic pattern. This is a compound, dynamic movement that spikes heart rate rapidly, unlike isolated exercises. Compared to other popular movements:
- Burpees: MET 8.0 — similar intensity but less posterior chain emphasis
- Box Jumps: MET 10.0 — plyometric, but shorter active time per rep
- Kettlebell Swings (Two-Handed): MET 9.0 — sustained ballistic output
- American Swing: MET 13.0 — overhead lockout significantly elevates demand
Additionally, kettlebell swings create a significant EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption) effect — the body continues burning elevated calories for hours after the workout ends, adding an estimated 15–25% to the total calorie burn shown.
Input Parameters
-
1
Body Weight
Your body weight in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lbs). Heavier individuals burn proportionally more calories per swing, as the MET formula scales linearly with body mass.
-
2
Number of Swings
Total swings performed. The calculator converts this to active time using the reps-per-minute rate for your selected swing style.
-
3
Swing Style
Two-Handed (MET 9.0, 20/min), Single-Arm (MET 11.0, 15/min), or American Swing (MET 13.0, 12/min). Style affects both calorie burn rate and achievable rep pace.

Frequently Asked Questions
Kettlebell swings burn approximately 9–16 calories per minute depending on swing style and body weight. Two-Handed Swings (MET 9.0) burn about 10.5 cal/min for a 70 kg person. Single-Arm Swings (MET 11.0) burn ~12.8 cal/min and American Swings (MET 13.0) burn ~15.2 cal/min for the same person.
100 Two-Handed Kettlebell Swings burn approximately 45–68 calories depending on body weight. At MET 9.0 and a pace of 20 swings per minute, a 60 kg person burns ~45 cal, a 75 kg person burns ~56 cal, and a 90 kg person burns ~67.5 cal. American Swings burn significantly more per 100 reps due to the higher MET and slower pace.
Kettlebell swings use MET values of 9.0 (Two-Handed), 11.0 (Single-Arm), and 13.0 (American Swing), based on vigorous calisthenics and ballistic resistance training data from the Compendium of Physical Activities. The formula is: Calories = MET × Weight (kg) × Time (hours).
At high intensity, kettlebell swings (MET 11.0–13.0) can burn more calories per minute than burpees (MET 8.0). However, burpees involve more total body movement and may be more accessible without equipment. The Two-Handed Swing at MET 9.0 is roughly comparable to burpees in calorie burn per minute.
This calculator uses your body weight (not kettlebell weight) as the primary variable, following the standard MET methodology. Heavier kettlebells increase exercise intensity and may slightly elevate MET in practice, but the body weight variable is the primary driver in the Compendium-based formula. A heavier bell will generally increase the actual MET above the baseline estimates used here.
