Calculation Method

Buying a bike that's the wrong size is the single most common mistake new riders make — and it can turn cycling from a joy into a chore of numb hands, an aching back, and twitchy handling. This bike size calculator recommends a frame size from your height and inseam, tailored to whether you ride a road, mountain, or hybrid bike, and translates it into both a centimeter frame measurement and a simple S/M/L label.

How Frame Size Is Decided

Two body measurements drive sizing. Your height gives a quick first estimate of the right size band, while your inseam (the inside-leg length from floor to crotch) refines it — two people of the same height can have quite different leg lengths, and the legs do the pedaling. For road bikes we also apply the classic inseam formula: frame (cm) ≈ inseam × 0.665.

Why Bike Type Matters

Frame geometry differs sharply between disciplines, so the same rider needs different numbers on different bikes:

  • Road bikes use seat-tube length in centimeters and run the largest numbers (48–61 cm).
  • Mountain bikes sit lower for standover clearance and quote sizes around 38–56 cm or simply S/M/L.
  • Hybrid and city bikes fall in between, prioritizing an upright, comfortable position.

Between Two Sizes?

If you land on the border between two sizes, your riding style breaks the tie. Choose the smaller frame for sportier, more responsive handling and easier standover clearance; choose the larger frame for a more relaxed, stretched-out position on long rides. Stem length and seatpost adjustment fine-tune the rest.

Measure Your Inseam Correctly

Stand barefoot with your back to a wall, feet about 15 cm apart. Place a hardcover book spine-up between your legs and pull it firmly up against your crotch as a saddle would press. Measure from the top of the book's spine to the floor. That number, not your trouser inseam, is what the calculator wants.

Disclaimer: Frame sizing varies between manufacturers and even between models from the same brand. Treat this recommendation as a starting point only — always check the maker's size chart and, ideally, test-ride the bike or get a professional fit before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what size bike I need?

Bike size is driven mainly by your height and inseam. Enter both and choose your bike type; road, mountain, and hybrid bikes use different sizing scales, so the right number depends on the style of bike.

Is bike frame size in cm or inches?

Road bikes are usually sized in centimeters (e.g. 54 cm), while mountain bikes are often sized in inches or S/M/L. This calculator shows both so you can match any manufacturer's chart.

What if I'm between two sizes?

If you fall between sizes, choose the smaller frame for a sportier, more maneuverable fit or the larger frame for more comfort and reach. A professional bike fit can settle borderline cases.
