Golf Grip Size Guide (Find Your Perfect Fit)

How to determine your golf grip size. Complete grip sizing chart by hand measurement, glove size correlation, and signs your grips are wrong.

Your golf grip size is determined by measuring from the tip of your middle finger to the base crease of your wrist—under 7 inches typically needs undersized grips, 7-8.25 inches is standard, and over 8.25 inches needs midsize or jumbo grips.

Grip size is often overlooked, but wrong grips can cause hooks, slices, and inconsistent shots regardless of swing quality.

How to Measure Your Hand

Method 1: Finger to Wrist

  1. Lay your dominant hand flat, palm up
  2. Measure from the tip of your middle finger to the main crease at the base of your palm (where your hand meets your wrist)
  3. Record the measurement in inches

Method 2: Hand Length + Finger Length

Some fitters use:

  • Hand length: Wrist crease to tip of middle finger
  • Middle finger length: Base to tip

Signs Your Grips Are Wrong Size

Too Small

  • Fingers wrap around and touch palm excessively
  • Grip feels like you're squeezing too hard
  • Shots tend to hook (right-hander hooks left)
  • Hands feel overly active through impact

Too Large

  • Hard to feel the club properly
  • Grip pressure feels loose
  • Shots tend to slice (right-hander slices right)
  • Hands feel restricted through impact

Correct Size

  • Middle two fingers just touch palm
  • Comfortable, secure grip without excessive pressure
  • Can feel the clubhead throughout swing
  • Consistent shot patterns

When Grip Size Matters Most

High Priority for Proper Sizing

  • Arthritis or joint issues (larger grips reduce hand strain)
  • Very large or small hands
  • Struggling with hooks or slices
  • Hand fatigue during rounds

Lower Priority

  • Complete beginners (swing needs to stabilize first)
  • Inconsistent swings (fix swing before fine-tuning grips)
  • Very casual golfers

Grip Size Across Your Bag

Most golfers use the same grip size throughout their bag, but some variations exist:

Club TypeCommon Adjustment
Driver/WoodsStandard size
IronsStandard size
WedgesStandard or 1 wrap smaller
PutterOften different (personal preference)

DIY Grip Sizing Check

Hold a club with your normal grip:

  • Too small: Gap between fingers and palm, or fingers digging into palm
  • Correct: Middle two fingers just barely touch palm
  • Too large: Fingers can't comfortably wrap around, or noticeable gap to palm

Professional Fitting for Grips

A professional fitting includes:

  • Precise hand measurements
  • Swing analysis for grip interaction
  • Testing different grip sizes
