Understanding the Golf Handicap Index Calculator
The handicap index calculator helps golfers determine their playing potential across different courses. Your handicap index is a more portable measure than a course handicap, as it can be used at any golf course worldwide.
What is a Handicap Index?
A handicap index represents your potential scoring ability on a course of standard difficulty. Unlike a course handicap, which is specific to one course, your handicap index can be used to calculate your course handicap at any golf course.
Key Components for Handicap Index Calculation
- Score differentials from your scoring record
- Course rating for each played round
- Slope rating from each course
- Playing conditions calculation (PCC)

- Course Rating: The expected scores for a scratch golfer
- Slope Rating: The relative difficulty rating (113 is standard)

Calculation Process
Score Differential Calculation
(Score - Course Rating) × (113 ÷ Slope Rating) + PCC
This formula converts your scores into score differentials that account for course difficulty.
Handicap Index Determination
- Calculate score differentials for each round
- Sort differentials from lowest to highest
- Use the best 8 out of your last 20 score differentials
- Average the selected differentials
- Round to the nearest tenth
